The Resourceful Pentester: Resources, Tools, and Targets for Pentesters

**Pizza and Beer will be provided**  Join EvolveSec, the largest cyber security Meetup in Chicago!

Jim Holcomb, Assoc. Security Consultant at Evolve Security, will be leading a workshop on pentesting. Laptops not required, but highly recommended.

Description: With the array of skills required to be an effective pentester, it is important for both students and active pentesters to continue to practice these skills in both simulated and real-world environments. Currently, there is an abundance of resources and tools available to pentesters such as capture the flags, intentionally vulnerable virtual machines, guides, and methodologies.

Abstract: This workshop will focus on demonstrating how pentesters can utilize numerous publicly available resources in order to practice implementing the Penetration Testing Execution Standard in simulated or safe lab environments. This workshop begins by defining the PTES coupled with a demonstration on how to apply this methodology when conducting penetration tests. The second half of the workshop will consist of a hands-on segment during which attendees can apply the PTES through attacking Metasploitable3. Finally, the talk will finish with an enumeration and discussion of different resources available for practicing and learning more about pentesting such as hack.evolve.io, VulnHub, Hack.me, and Over the Wire.

System Setup: This talk will be workshop based. Therefore, it would be beneficial to attend with the following resources available:

A laptop with VirtualBox installed: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Alternatively install with a package manager (brew, choco, apt, etc)

A laptop with a Kali Linux (64 bit) VirtualBox instance installed https://www.kali.org/downloads/

Alternatively install a preconfigured ova from Offensive Security: https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/

A laptop with a Metasploitable2 or Metasploitable3 VirtualBox instance installed (highly encouraged):

https://information.rapid7.com/metasploitable-download.html

https://github.com/rapid7/metasploitable3

Note: Metasploitable3 requires Vagrant and Packer to install and must be built locally. Metasploitable2 can be downloaded and loaded as VMDK. We will review both of them but you only need one for the workshop.

Secure Mechanisms for Data Handling in Healthcare with MATTER & Brian Liceaga

Name *
Name

Join us as we Evolve Security's Brian Liceaga partners with MATTER to discuss Healthcare Security.

We are giving away 20 tickets to the first people who register with the above form!

Registration is Mandatory:

 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/matter-workshop-secure-mechanisms-for-data-handling-in-healthcare-tickets-32964757477

Abstract:

Secure mechanisms for transferring and receiving data are critical to ensure adequate care of sensitive information, including PII and PHI. Whether you are a health care startup or large organization, suitable protections for data at rest and in transit can be implemented at surprisingly low costs. Establishing secure data standards and controls allows for ease of use in doing business with partners/customers/patients, a reduction vendor risk, and lessens the complexities of achieving compliance with HIPAA and other regulations. From the time data is ingested, there needs to be an audit trial that can account for each step of processing, including additional transfers, until the data is appropriately stored at rest. Further, automation should be leveraged whenever possible to minimize the risks of human error. Ultimately, the approach for enabling secure data sharing needs to stem from the organization’s data classification and handling standards. The talk will address how to categorize data and focus on how companies can accomplish secure data transfers across several different mediums.

About Brian:

Brian Liceaga has worked and consulted for organizations of all sizes from start-ups to large corporations. Brian’s experience includes vulnerability management, application security, incident response, security program development, cloud security, DevSecOps, and penetration testing. Chicago OWASP April Meeting - Storms Brewing in your JS & Avoiding an inCIdent

Evolve Security Academy is excited to be the Sponsor's of This Month's OWASP Chicago Meeting

Register: https://www.meetup.com/EvolveSec/events/239216532/

Agenda:

6:00-6:30pm - Gather and mingle

Food & Beverage Provided

Talk 1: Warning Ahead: Security Storms are Brewing In your Javascript

JavaScript controls our lives – we use it to zoom in and out of a map, to automatically schedule doctor appointments and to play online games. But have we ever properly considered the security state of this scripting language?

Before dismissing the (in)security posture of JavaScript on the grounds of a client-side problem, consider the impact of JavaScript vulnerability exploitation to the enterprise: from stealing server-side data to infecting users with malware. Hackers are beginning to recognize this new playground and are quickly adding JavaScript exploitation tools to their Web attack arsenal.

In this talk we explore the vulnerabilities behind Javascript, including:

- A new class of vulnerabilities unique only to JavaScript

- Vulnerabilities in 3rd-party platforms which are exploited through JavaScript code

- A new set of vulnerabilities enabled by HTML5

Talk 2:  Avoiding an inCIdent: when CI hurts

Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment systems are an absolute necessity. Unfortunately common CI systems such as Jenkins have multiple security issues, and once compromised provide a fairly big payoff for an attacker. As helpful as they are, the reality is that your CI is a high risk target. This talk will discuss some common attack methods against Jenkins and other CI systems, and suggest some strategies for architecting a secure solution.

Rob Havelt has been hacking all the things for a really long time. Formerly running a large PenTest team at SpiderLabs, currently doing Merger and Acquisitions security for Salesforce.

OWASP: OWASP is a 501(c)(3) worldwide not-for-profit charitable organization focused on improving the security of software. Our mission is to make software security visible, so that individuals and organizations worldwide can make informed decisions about true software security risks.

Our sponsor CloudPassage will be raffling off an Amazon Dot for registered attendees! Food & beverages will also be provided.

Abstract:

Modern elastic cloud infrastructure is fundamentally breaking traditional security approaches. Public cloud has no natural perimeter and network segmentation leaving individual cloud servers exposed. In private cloud, malicious East-West traffic inside the network is a serious threat. As new workloads are added and retired dynamically, change control is difficult, and updating granular firewall rules and security policies becomes a risky, manual process. Join us and learn the 6 Critical Criteria to secure your public, private or hybrid cloud – on-demand, anywhere, at any scale.

About Sam Herath:

Sam has over 20+ years of technical and solution experience in IT security, enterprise compliance, data protection, identity management and related technologies at multiple global organizations.  Most recent areas of expertise and focus include: Cloud Security, SIEM, Threat Analysis, Enterprise Data Protection and Identity Management.  Sam has held multiple senior systems engineering and solution specialist roles at McAfee, ArcSight/HP Enterprise Security, Oracle, Credant Technologies and Sun Microsystems.  Prior to that Sam was a consulting Technology Manager at E&Ys Advanced Technologies practice.

Network Forensics 101 Lab w/ Alex Castillo of FireEye

Food and Beverages will be provided thanks to our sponsor TEKsystems!

Abstract:

We are becoming more and more dependent on open networks (internet) where most of our transactions live. This has led to the fast development of new cyber threats and information security issues, which are utilized by cyber criminals. Mistrust for telecommunications and computer network technologies have tremendous socioeconomic impacts. The increased complexity of the communication and networking infrastructure is making investigation of the crimes difficult. Clues of illegal digital activities are often buried in large volumes of data that are hard to inspect in order to detect crimes and collect evidence.

Network forensics is a newly emerged research area, and its importance has attracted a great attention among computer professionals, law enforcers, and practitioners. However, network forensics still faces diverse challenges and issues in terms of the efficiency of digital evidence processing and the related forensic procedures. Come learn more in this hands on 101 lab.

Bootcamps are designed to prepare you to get a job and be successful in your career. Whether your goal is to switch careers, climb the ladder where you work, or challenge yourself, the bootcamp model has helped tens of thousands of grads to grow their skills and careers more quickly than traditional degree programs.

Please join us to meet a variety of bootcamp programs that are available in the Chicagoland area which cover cyber security, software/web development, and UX/UI design. There will be both full-time and part-time programs being represented. You won't find more information in one place regarding a bootcamp education than here. We will be featuring an alumni panel so you can hear first-hand stories about the experiences each bootcamp offers.

Cyber Intelligence Analysis and Russian Election Hacking

Food and Beverages will be provided thanks to our sponsor onShore Security!

Abstract:

In our increasingly cyber-dependent world, what kinds of evidence and analysis do we need to defend our critical assets from adversaries? What about when we protect our national security and democracy? On Dec. 29th, the U.S. government released a report about Russian interference in the U.S. election process and announced a set of countermeasures, including economic sanctions and diplomatic expulsions. However, the quality of the report has been widely critiqued by the security community. Join Patrik Maldre, Managing Partner at Retel Partners, for a discussion about the emerging field of cyber intelligence and the burden of proof in the age of digital operations.

This event is a follow-up to the Nov. 3rd event entitled "Election Hacking: The Dimensions of Russian Interference". Now, the Electors have voted and Donald J. Trump will be the next President of the United States. However, the topic of Russian political hacking and information disclosure in the election process has arguably garnered even more attention after Nov. 8th than before it. President Obama's administration, leaders of both parties in Congress, private sectors experts, U.S. intelligence agencies and the incoming president are all embroiled in debates about cyber intelligence. Come learn more about this topic that is increasingly important not only for the country, but also for your organization.

About Patrik Maldre:

Patrik Maldre is Managing Partner of Retel Partners, which he started in June 2016 in Estonia. Retel Partners works to build bridges between Europe and the United States in the fields of defense, cyber security, and e-government by providing analytical, translation, program management, and business development services.

Previously, Patrik has focused on the political and strategic aspects of cyber security as both a diplomat in Estonia and an analyst in the United States. As Desk Officer for Cyber Security Policy in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he represented Estonia in international organizations, coordinated multinational projects, and prepared statements for high-level Estonian officials. As an analyst on both sides of the Atlantic, Patrik has also published various book chapters, op-eds, and briefing papers about Estonia, the Baltic cyber threat landscape, NATO cyber defense, and Russian cyber capabilities.

Patrik completed mandatory military service in the Estonian Defence Forces as a sergeant and squad leader, and continues to serve on a voluntary basis in the Estonian Defence League. He holds a double-B.A. in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in International Relations from the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals, and is currently working towards a Certificate in Cyber Intelligence from the University of South Florida and a Diploma in Cyber Security from the Evolve Security Academy in Chicago, USA.
